Individual Learning Excursions

The Individual Learning Excursion (ILE) is a tailored, out-of-state experience that takes place during the curriculum, designed in partnership with each Fellow’s Executive Coach to meet the demands of being a change agent in Hawaiʻi.

Its purpose is to engage Fellows in an experience that challenges their sense of self, represents some level of risk-taking, drives their development by pulling them out of what is comfortable and familiar, and provides opportunities for context creation and reflection. The entire process—from exploring themes and learning goals, planning and embarking on the excursion, and debriefing and sharing learning with their Cohort after their return—results in a transformative journey.

Engaging in an ILE results in a substantial cognitive shift in the way the Fellow thinks about themself and their leadership. Identifying learning goals and focusing a Fellow’s ability to address deeper personal and professional development also enhances their leadership capacity to accelerate social change.

With more than 100 Fellows taking part in ILEs since inception, similar learning goals continue to surface. These are the five most common themes. ILEs address one or more of these themes.
