Navigator Ka’iu Kimura Remembers Mentor Kalepa Baybayan

Many are mourning the passing of master navigator Chad Kalepa Baybayan – he was 65. He served as captain of the famous voyaging canoe Hōkūleʻa and spent nearly 50 years of his life working with the Polynesian Voyaging Society and educating and training people across the world about traditional Polynesian wayfinding – the art of navigating without instruments.

According to family spokesperson Ka’iu Kimura, Baybayan died suddenly but from natural causes while visiting ‘ohana in Seattle, Washington. I spoke to Kimura, executive director of the University of Hawai‘i at Hilo’s ‘Imiloa Astronomy Center, about the legacy Baybayan leaves behind.
