A firebreak project on O‘ahu is nearing completion as crews work to reduce wildfire risks near populated communities.
Pono Pacific Land Management said it partnered with the state Department of Transportation on the latest project in Mākaha Valley, clearing about 3.7 acres of vegetation along a 3,200-foot stretch.
Officials said the firebreak is designed to help protect more than 200 neighboring structures and 572 condominium units.
Because of limited access to the area, crews completed much of the work by hand and used a helicopter to remove loads of vegetation.
“Building firebreaks and establishing defensible space near densely populated areas creates a critical buffer between people’s homes and lives and potential wildfire areas,” Pono Pacific CEO and co-founder John Leong said.
