It’s August, which means it’s back-to-school for many students. In this issue of Taking on Tomorrow, you’ll hear from the Castle Foundation’s Alex Harris and Honolulu Community College Chancellor Karen Lee on how they are preparing students to grow their professional networks and transition into the workforce. You’ll also hear from Fellows Janice Ikeda, Erika Lacro, and Kapā Oliveira on how they or their organizations are supporting youth leadership development.

In this month’s Fellows Spotlight, Rich Matsuda shares his approach to leadership. You’ll want to listen to what he has to say. Also this summer, we launched Leaders Lab, a series of one-day workshops for emerging local leaders. In June, we hosted a lab for educators and academic leaders, and in July we worked with health, science, and technology leaders.

Finally, many Fellows had a chance to visit with Pwo navigator Nainoa Thompson aboard Hōkūleʻa. Nainoa shared lessons from Mau Pialug, the master navigator who inspired the regeneration of Polynesian navigation. He also spoke about the Polynesian Voyaging Society’s current voyage, Moananuiākea. For Nainoa, voyaging is about leadership and allowing young people to find their way.
