Due to the Maui wildfires, Native Hawaiian Philanthropy (NHP) has shifted their support and resources to help Lahaina and Kula families. They are currently working with partners to implement an indigenous-informed disaster recovery approach to assist Lahaina and Kula families displaced by the fires. Their multi-disciplinary approach to disaster trauma provides culturally-grounded sacred spaces and activities to actively engage with educators, grief counselors, social workers, researchers, and traditional healers for ongoing healing and improved mental health and wellness.
NHP is a Community-Based, Native Hawaiian Organization (NHO) with the goal to improve the socio-economic conditions of Native Hawaiian communities statewide. Their 14 NHO partner organizations are successful nonprofit organizations grounded in traditional Hawaiian values and practices that continue to promote and perpetuate the Hawaiian culture.
NHP's mission is to:
- Bridge NHOs with the philanthropic sector.
- Develop endowments to provide long-term and perpetual funding sources for NHOs that implement and practice traditional Hawaiian values, education, and inherent rights.
This initiative engages and guides Hawai‘i public school seniors whose final year of high school was impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. It engages and guides seniors in transitioning to their post-high school plans and connects them to postsecondary education, training, and for eligible students, the opportunity to take free UHCC career exploration classes.
