On this episode of Empowered Hawai‘i, hosts Jeff Mikulina and Kelly Simek travel to Lahaina, one year after the devastating wildfire, to explore what the future holds for rebuilding this historic community. The episode features conversations with local experts and residents who provide insight into the disaster’s causes and the steps needed to prevent such tragedies in the future.

Jeff and Kelly first begin the conversation with Archie Kalepa, a renowned waterman, Lahaina resident, and retired lifeguard. Archie discusses the factors that contributed to the wildfire, emphasizing the importance of learning from the past to protect the community moving forward. His insights highlight the critical need for resilience and preparedness in the face of natural disasters.

Next, Kelly speaks with Kaipo Kekoa, President of the Hawai‘i Farmers Union. Kaipo reflects on Lahaina’s rich agricultural history, once known as the “Venice of the Pacific,” where kalo (taro)and ʻulu (breadfruit) thrived. Kaipo also shares the stories of Mokuʻula, a tiny island surrounded by a freshwater spring named Mokuhinia. The freshwater source was run dry due to the sugar cane industry and has since vanished. The conversation underscores the importance of sustainable agriculture in the region’s future recovery, and the hope of restoring Mokuhinia freshwater pond.

Jeff then speaks with Kapali Keahi, who dives into the impact of old plantation irrigation practices that drained Lahaina’s water sources, leading to the drying out of the area’s lowlands. Kapali’s perspective sheds light on the crucial role water management will play in Lahaina’s revitalization.

Finally, the duo meet with Kalikolehua Storer, Operations Supervisor for Puʻu Kukui Watershed, to discuss the importance of protecting Lahaina’s native ecosystem. Kalikolehua highlights the vital role Puʻu Kukui plays in the community’s environmental well-being, ensuring the flow of water from mauka to makai remains.
