Honolulu-born Doug Johnstone oversees the development of Ward Village in Kaka‘ako as the Hawai‘i region president of Howard Hughes Holdings.

The sprawling 60-acre Ward Village, under Johnstone’s leadership, has transformed over the past few years. After once serving as a hub for light industrial, then retail businesses, the area is now home to luxury and market condominium towers as well as retail and restaurant businesses.

The trajectory to build the neighborhood of high-rises was put in motion in 2009, when Howard Hughes predecessor General Growth received approval from the Hawai‘i Community Development Authority for its Ward Village master plan. Howard Hughes was created in 2010 as part of General Growth’s emergence from Chapter 11 bankruptcy reorganization. Prior to joining Howard Hughes, Johnstone worked for Kamehameha Schools, whose Our Kaka‘ako master plan is remaking the other end of Kaka‘ako.
