Native Hawaiian Education Programs Receive Reprieve from Federal Funding Cut

Federal funding for Native Hawaiian education programs will continue for at least another year after U.S. Department of Education Secretary Linda McMahon vowed not to cut the Native Hawaiian Education Program, offering a temporary reprieve to organizations across Hawai‘i that had warned of widespread service reductions and closures.

U.S. Sen. Brian Schatz announced last week that the department agreed to maintain funding for current Native Hawaiian Education Program grant recipients for another fiscal year, preserving about $46 million annually for over 60 early childhood education sites statewide and other services including home visits, workforce development, Hawaiian-­language initiatives and family support programs serving more than 3,000 Hawai‘i families.

The announcement follows months of uncertainty surrounding the future of Native Hawaiian education funding after the department submitted a proposed fiscal year 2026-27 budget that eliminated funding for NHEP entirely.
