Sex trafficking in Hawaii is affecting local children at alarming rates, advocates say, and online access is making it easier for perpetrators to reach kids.

Still, the crime is often misunderstood as something that happens “somewhere else.” Advocates and frontline responders say stopping it will take education, survivor-centered services and coordinated action across communities and industries.

April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month, and Spotlight Now opened a conversation Tuesday on sex trafficking and sexual abuse in the islands.
