As Hawai‘i braces for a mild recession in 2026, residents could find themselves having to borrow more money. They already added the most average household debt in the United States during the third quarter of this year.
HNN Sunrise sat down with American Savings Bank CEO Ann Teranishi, who was recently named Hawai‘i Business Magazine’s 2025 CEO of the Year, to talk about Hawai‘i’s affordability crisis and managing money in uncertain times.
“I would want people to know that I think the people in the roles, like myself and in other banks or other organizations really care deeply,” Teranishi said. “I don’t know that we feel like we have all the answers, but we know that there are some challenges around affordability and really making sure that each of us and the organizations that we serve in are doing whatever we can to help move the needle around affordability.”
