More than 88,000 cesspools discharge over 53 million gallons of raw sewage into Hawai‘i waters each day.
Posing a major threat not only to the state's expansive marine environment, but to immediate clean water sources, the nonprofit Wastewater Alternatives and Innovations (WAI) has made it its mission to provide tangible, safe, and effective solutions.
"When I first started, there was just this tendency, to say, 'oh, we're going to replace all the cesspools with sceptic systems'," says WAI co-founder and executive director, Stuart Coleman.
But Coleman believes Hawai‘i needs higher and better systems.
