There are few matters as vital to the long-term health of an organization than the selection and cultivation of its future leaders. And yet, succession planning is too often a topic that is set on the back burner or worse, put off completely. With companies of all sizes having to pivot in recent years amid layoffs, employees taking early retirement, and employee shortages due to the pandemic, it has become more important than ever to have systems in place to ensure a smooth transition for those in critical roles when the time comes.

As part of an ongoing Focus Forum discussion series, Pacific Business News brought together three leaders in the areas of succession planning and executive transitions.

Benjamin Ancheta, Jr., President and Owner of Inkinen Executive Search; Shelee Kimura, President and CEO of Hawaiian Electric; and Leslie Mullens, President of PlayBook Consulting Group came together on August 11 to discuss the importance of leadership succession planning, identifying and developing key employees for higher positions, and strategic tips on how to set up a succession plan for success.

The discussion was moderated by Tammy Mencel, Publisher and Market President of Pacific Business News.
