Adversity is no stranger in the centennial story of HPM Building Supply.

The Hawai‘i Island-based construction company, founded in Kea‘au in 1921 as Hawai‘i Planing Mill, Ltd., has quite literally experienced seismic challenges in the past 100 years; tsunamis wrecked much of its infrastructure around Hilo in 1946 and 1960, forcing extensive rebuilds.

During World War II, HPM, which was founded by Japanese immigrants, had its assets seized by the U.S. government for more than four years.

More recently, HPM has faced challenges alongside the rest of the industry in terms of supply chains amid skyrocketing demand, and getting through some employee Covid-19 vaccine hesitancy.
