As Jan Harada previously told Pacific Business News, the biggest professional risk she ever took was taking a pay cut and leaving a state job to work with at-risk communities, unsure if she’d be any good at the work. As it turned out, she was given her first opportunity to be an executive director at age 32. Nearly six years later, she would join PBN’s 40 Under 40 class of 2013, recognized for her ability to guide nonprofit Helping Hands Hawaii, as its president and CEO, out of an economic downturn.

She now finds herself in a similar position – this time navigating the effects of the Covid-19 economy on local nonprofits – from a philanthropic standpoint. Harada became H.T. Hayashi Foundation’s first executive director in July 2019 after a sabbatical following 13 years of leadership in the nonprofit sector.
