The Micronesian canoe set up Saturday in the lobby of the Kaua‘i Community College Performing Arts Center served as a focal point of the “Navigating Success” Micronesian Youth Summit Kaua‘i.

Karlyse Hesly of the Kaua‘i District Health Office said the Saturday event was the first Micronesian Youth Summit on Kaua‘i, and included special community guests like Kaua‘i Community College Chancellor Margaret Sanchez, Kaua‘i Area Complex Superintendent Leila Maeda-Kobayashi, and an anticipated visit by Mayor Derek S.K. Kawakami adding their mana‘o to the day of cultural pride, identity, and empowerment.

Presented by We Are Oceania (WAO) the summit was assembled under four guiding pillars that included College, Career, Community and Solidarity that WAO deemed essential to navigating success.

Between 3,000 to 4,000 Micronesians live on Kaua‘i, including about 200 youth in local schools, according to WAO President and CEO Jocelyn Howard. Many of these youth face challenges including language access, housing instability and school engagement.
