Makali‘i Metrics, a Hawai‘i‑based startup specializing in soil analysis, opened its first laboratory in Mō‘ili‘ili on May 14, marking the start of full operations on O‘ahu. Founded in 2022 by CEO Daniel Richardson and Kūha‘o Zane, the company delivers locally tailored soil data for farmers, ranchers, researchers and land stewards. Richardson works in the lab with chief technology officer Zachary Pilien.
What started as a conversation in Mānoa grew into an ideation group for a private soil testing company rooted in supporting Hawaiian land practices. Richardson and Zane — who were part of that group — combined their experiences and capabilities to launch Makali‘i Metrics.
